Chapter Twenty-Six

The following night was the second time the Daughters of Calatin visited me. They took their pleasures slowly. I lay, unable to move, while they wrapped their cold limbs around me, put their dry lips against my skin, dragged their ragged black nails through my hair.

Several lifetimes later, when they were done, they sat on the bed around me and the air moved beside the bed as it does on a hot day above bare rock. Through the haze I saw Maeve and Ailell in their bedroom. The Queen lay naked on the bed, Ailell stood by a low table holding a flagon of wine. I saw them, I heard their voices, I knew their thoughts. I could not move, but the Daughters smiled to each other as they saw me watching and listening.

‘We keep our bargainsss.’
